Save 100 metres of tropical ocean
This gift buys 100 metres squared of coastal water in the area known as Golfo Dulce in Costa Rica, to provide a critical nursery habitat for the Endangered Green Turtle and other native ocean species. These coastal waters contain a wide diversity of fish, which in turn provided sustenance for the sharks and rays of the local ecosystem.
However, the Endangered Scalloped Hammerheads in particular are subject to intense fishing right now for their meat and fins. Fishery exploitation in the area has led to a drastic decline in the local turtle, fish and shark populations during the past few decades. Because the Green Turtle has a low reproductive rate and matures slowly, they are particularly vulnerable to fishery exploitation and have experienced significant declines throughout their range.
